Daily Devotional: Psalm 42:5

Why are you cast down, O my soul? Any why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.
Psalm 42:5

Having worked in the medical field for many years, I’ve seen firsthand the effects of those who suffer from depression. The mind is a powerful organ, created by a powerful God. For years, man has authored self-help books and relied on the counsel of scholarly individuals to help one overcome such afflictions. However, when any part of our body is not functioning, whether mental or physical, there’s no better resource than to read the instruction manual authored by the One who created us. The Psalms focus on God and reflect on His programming for His people. The more you read them, the more you understand and are blessed by what you learn of God and His work as Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, and Comforter.

There are many known causes for depression and concealing sin is one of them. We learn from Scripture that David was depressed until he confessed his sin of adultery (Psalm 32:3-4). We know that Cain became angry and his countenance fell (Genesis 4:5). The way out of depression caused by guilt is confession and seeking the Lord’s forgiveness. We learn from Solomon in Proverbs 28:13, “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” Healing and restoration is only found in Christ alone. If there’s a sin that’s weighing you down, don't hang onto it any longer -- give it to Jesus. Lay it at His feet and walk away. May Christ be your guidance counselor and your source of comfort in times of pain and suffering. Cast your cares on Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

Sitting at the feet of Jesus,

Tom Moore
