When Does Life Begin?

When does life begin?  That is a question many debate. Especially in the great abortion debate.

There are some that will claim, like Annan, who recently tweeted AFJ Chapel,

"That innocent life has no soul (even the bible you "read" mentions that life starts only at birth)"

The people that use this argument even claim that no "religious book" advocates for life before birth.  Are they right? Is this just some political debate? Or is it really a spiritual debate? Let us take a look at scriptures. As Christians our final authority is God our Heavenly Father and he speaks to us through the Word of God.

In the Tanakh (the Jewish Bible, which includes the Torah and Talmud, or for Christians is the Bible's Old Testament) we see God address the issue of new life.

For Jews and Christians alike, it is said that the primary argument for life beginning at conception comes from Psalm 139.

13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

You won't see me teaching the Quran, but for this study, I will reference it.   That is because, even that teaching, that faith, that "religious book" addresses life begins before birth. Now mind you, the Muslim faith comes out of a dispute between two Jewish brothers, so all three of these faiths are connected in someway. However, that is the subject of another message for another day.

“Allah—surely nothing is hidden from Him in the earth or in the heaven. He it is who shapes you in the wombs as He likes; there is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise.” (Q. 3:5-6)

In fact there are four verses in the Quran that specifically talks about this very topic of when life begins.   The fact is,Abortion is forbidden under normal circumstances by nearly all the major world religions. Traditionally, abortion was not deemed permissible by Muslim scholars. Shiite scholars considered it forbidden after implantation of the fertilized ovum. However, Sunni scholars have held various opinions on the matter, but all agreed that after 4 months gestation abortion was not permitted. In addition, classical Islamic scholarship had only considered threats to maternal health as a reason for therapeutic abortion.

For this study, we will look at one more of those verses from the Quran,

"And certainly We created man of an extract of clay, then We made him a small seed (nutfah) in a firm resting‐place (the uterine wall), then We made the seed a clot (‘alaqah), then We made the clot a lump of flesh (mudhghah), then We made (in) the lump of flesh bones (‘idham), then We clothed the bones with flesh (lahim) …” (23:12–14)."
In the Bible's new Testament, it continues the same message as is in the Old Testament (aka the Jewish the Tanakh)

In Luke 1: 39-44 we read,

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,
40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.

 In Galatians 1:15, we read,

15 But God had special plans for me and set me apart for his work even before I was born. He called me through his grace

This issue is a hot button topic I know, but it is so much more than just the woman's body, it is also the body, the life of the unborn.  A life that cannot speak for itself.  We as Christians must speak up for those that cannot speak, even as the world is hell bent on eliminating these lives.

The facts are clear, the Bible, as well as all the major religions teach us that life begins at conception.   When anyone says, that they don't, they are misled, misinformed.  It is clear they haven't taken the time to read the scripture or any of the texts used in this study.
